AROMATIC DIVERSITY AND NATURAL ELEGANCE
Chestnut barrels offer distilleries a unique opportunity to give their spirits a distinctive character. The medium-weight wood of the sweet chestnut is known for its fine, natural sweetness, which contributes to a round, harmonious aroma profile during maturation. It is particularly well-suited for fruit brandies but also unfolds an impressive spectrum of flavors in other spirits such as grappa, rum, or innovative New Western-style gins.
THE WOOD – SWEETNESS, TANNINS, AND A GENTLE SPICE
Chestnut wood features an open-pored structure that encourages intensive aging. Compared to oak, it is milder in tannins, yet it imparts an elegant structure, soft vanilla and honey notes, and a slightly nutty nuance to the spirit. Maturation in chestnut promotes early flavor depth while also creating a warm, golden color. Its mild spice and natural sweetness make chestnut barrels an exciting tool for distillers exploring new sensory dimensions.
ORIGIN AND SUSTAINABILITY – SWEET CHESTNUT FROM FRANCE AND HUNGARY
Only sustainably grown sweet chestnut trees are used in the production of these barrels. The trees come from carefully managed forests in France and Hungary, with their quality being regularly monitored. Responsible resource management is a priority: the cultivation areas follow ecological standards to ensure long-term forest preservation and consistently high wood quality.
TONELERIA DEL SUR – TRADITION AND INNOVATION SINCE 1974
The barrels are crafted by the renowned cooperage Toneleria del Sur, founded in 1974 by master cooper Rafael Cabello. Located in the traditional wine and distilling region of Montilla Moriles in southern Spain, this family-run business continues to produce under the highest quality standards. Since 2005, the signature barrels have been marketed internationally under the brand name CASKNOLIA – a symbol of craftsmanship and sensory excellence.
FOR SPIRITS WITH EXPRESSION AND CHARACTER
A chestnut barrel is far more than a simple aging vessel – it is an active contributor to flavor development. For those seeking depth, smoothness, and sustainability, these barrels are an excellent choice. The combination of premium wood, traditional craftsmanship, and ecological responsibility makes each barrel a special aging partner for distinctive, characterful spirits.
