SMOKE, AGAVE & DEPTH IN COMPACT FORMAT
Our reconstructed barrels made from mezcal casks combine traditional cooperage craftsmanship with the reuse of highly expressive oak from Mexico. In our cooperages, original American white oak mezcal barrels are transformed into carefully crafted small-format aging barrels with capacities of 27, 55, and 110 liters. These compact oak barrels are ideal for the professional aging, finishing, and flavor refinement of whisky, rum, tequila, gin, beer, or cider.
Maturation with mezcal – a traditionally produced agave spirit – imparts an intense, smoky, and complex aroma profile to the wood. The roasting of agave hearts in underground pit ovens creates distinctive notes that become deeply embedded in the oak. Typical characteristics include smoky tones, roasted agave, earthy nuances, and delicate herbal and citrus notes, complemented by subtle vanilla and toasted oak notes from the American oak.
FROM MEZCAL CASK TO COMPACT AGING BARREL
For the reconstruction process, original mezcal casks are professionally dismantled. The staves are precisely shortened, newly fitted, and then reassembled using traditional cooperage techniques to create smaller aging barrels.
The reduced volume creates a highly active barrel: the increased ratio of wood surface to liquid ensures faster and more intense flavor interaction. This makes these small-format barrels particularly suitable for finishing projects, experimental batches, or targeted maturation concepts with high sensory intensity.
ARTISAN RECONDITIONING & MAXIMUM QUALITY
Our experienced coopers refurbish each reconstructed barrel with the utmost care. The staves are inspected and reworked if necessary, the exterior surfaces are finely sanded, and the barrel hoops are adjusted or renewed. Special attention is given to tightness, wood quality, and sensory performance.
The result is technically flawless, highly aromatic oak barrels that preserve the character of the original mezcal while offering optimal conditions for refilling and maturation.
Rebuilt mezcal casks offer an especially intense and characterful alternative to conventional small-format barrels. The sizes 27, 55, and 110 liters allow targeted flavor control and are ideal for producers seeking to integrate smoky, earthy, and agave-driven cask notes into their maturation projects.
